With the Grand Prix circuit closed and the Final slowly creeping up on us, The Judges' Table is also preparing to judge US National Championship, Japanese National Championships, and possibly also Russian and Canadian National Championships, depending upon interest. Sign up here if you're interested in judging any of those!

NHK Trophy was, quite literally, record-breaking. An unprecedented seventh pairs team qualified for the Grand Prix Final in Barcelona starting December 10, and Yuzuru Hanyu set three new world records for his short program, his free skate, and his overall score. For those of us busy with Thanksgiving in the United States, it was very easy to overlook other fantastic performances - fortunately, our US- and Canada-based judges finished their turkey and paid far more attention than your valiant editor.
So, in alphabetical order, here are the judges for NHK Trophy 2015: Erin can be found blogging at On Stage and Screen or on Twitter. Joe writes at the Huffington Post and may be best known in the figure skating community for their piece on Skate America. They can also be found on Twitter. Kathy video recaps skating events at Lutz and Glory with fellow judges Bronwyn (Skate Canada 2015) and Will (NHK 2015). She's also on Twitter. Phillip can be found on Twitter. Special thanks to Phillip for being a part of our original TEB 2015 judging team and for jumping over to NHK 2015. Will video recaps skating events at Lutz and Glory with fellow judges Bronwyn (Skate Canada 2015) and Kathy (NHK 2015). He's also on Twitter. Find out more about the judges here! LET'S GET JUDGING. When you're finished reading, leave a comment to let us know what you thought about NHK, how you think the real judges did, and how you think our judges did. If you disagree, sign up to judge an event later in the year and share your thoughts! The Rostelecom Cup 2015 is complete! On November 20-21, the competitors skated under a bit of a cloud of confusion. The ISU only today announced its plan to adjust Grand Prix Final qualification standings following the cancellation of the free programs in Bordeaux last weekend. Skaters in Moscow - and their fans - had no idea how the tiebreakers would fall out and thus were not sure how highly they had to be ranked to give themselves a chance at the Grand Prix final. Following this new announcement, Jackie Wong broke down his expectations and did the math over at Rocker.
That said, Rostelecom was an incredibly exciting competition, highlighted for many by the battle for dominance among the three Russian women in the Ladies' event. In alphabetical order, here are the judges for Rostelecom Cup 2015: Alice can be found on Twitter. Braulio can be found doing play-by-play for ice dance on FSU. Justin can be found on Twitter. Sigrid can be found on Twitter or converting Grand Prix event times for time zones across globe (I am 100% reliant on this). Victor can be found on Twitter or winning the US UGL Juvenile Regional. Find out more about the judges here! LET'S GET JUDGING. When you're finished reading, leave a comment to let us know what you thought about Rostelecom, how you think the real judges did, and how you think our judges did. If you disagree, sign up to judge an event later in the year and share your thoughts! This was a rough weekend for everyone. Paris remains on everyone's minds. If nothing else, I'm grateful all of the skaters, coaches, families, fans, and delegations remain safe.
While I'm usually of the opinion that it's important to keep going with our lives as we ordinarily would have, it is also important to respect both the lives lost and the lives of those who survived and who now must figure out how to keep moving forward. In deference to everyone affected by the terrorism in France this Friday, living and passed, The Judges' Table will not be rejudging the Trophée Éric Bompard short programs this week. Thanks to the judges who would have participated this week. There will be another opportunity for you to participate this season. We'll be back next weekend with the Rostelecom Cup in Russia. In the meantime, have a peaceful week. It's hard to believe, but with three Grands Prix down, we're halfway through the 2015-2016 GP season. The Judges' Table has reviewed performances - and the judges' performances - at Skate America, Skate Canada, and the Cup of China, and I wanted to thank all the participants and readers for making that possible. I hope you've been having as much fun reading and writing as I've had putting everything together!
Thanks to the interest in judging even more events, I've added the Japanese, Russian, and Canadian National Championships to our list of potential events, as well as the European Championship and Four Continents. If you're interested in judging any of these events or any upcoming Grand Prix, please sign up! If you've already done that (thank you!) and would like to express your interests in any particular events, please email [email protected]. We've gotten a lot of really helpful feedback and critiques over the past few weeks, as well - I'm working on making the site a little easier to navigate as well as incorporating fun bonus questions that focus a little bit less on the actual scoring (observations on costumes, helping skaters pick out more unique music, etc.). If you have suggestions or feedback, feel free to send an email or reach out on Twitter. Thanks again for making The Judges' Table such a fun experience for everyone! Check back this week for updates to our judging list in preparation for the Trophée Éric Bompard. Cup of China 2015 is complete, and without any major injuries this year! On November 6-7, the competitors faced off in Beijing, finally bringing live figure skating to fans in Asia at a reasonable hour and causing extreme misery to those in the Western hemisphere. Props to everyone who stayed awake to watch live, especially Skate of America judge Patrick, who tweeted from the Worlds 2016 account!
In alphabetical order, here are the judges for Cup of China 2015: Emmy predicted each FD score at GPF 2014 within a 0.5 margin of error. You can find her on Twitter. Joanna is on Tumblr! Justine is busy coaching and writing about skating. You can also find her on Twitter. Mark is documenting his skating journey and blogging for the USFS Fan Zone. He's on Twitter here. Roxanne can be found on Tumblr or Twitter. LET'S GET JUDGING. When you're finished reading, leave a comment to let us know what you thought about Cup of China, how you think the real judges did, and how you think our judges did. If you disagree, sign up to judge an event later in the year and share your thoughts! Another 2015 Grand Prix is in the books! On October 30-31, the competitors faced off in Lethbridge, Alberta. Skate Canada featured lots of surprises: raise your hand if you had Yuzuru and Elizaveta in 6th and 7th after their short programs (now put your hand down because you're lying).
Here are the judges for this event in alphabetical order: Amanda can be found on Twitter and also judging Skate America 2015. Thanks for being the first judge to participate in two events! Bronwyn can be found video recapping the Grand Prix events at Lutz and Glory, as well as live-tweeting gymnastics, baseball, and skating (sometimes all at the same time) on Twitter. Lauren can be found on Twitter..."Otherwise I can be found in Starbucks and Luluemon ;)" Rafael can be found impressing us all with this awesome axel (and on Twitter). (Editor's note: Rafael didn't send this, but it's awesome and needed to be shared.) Sigrid can be found on Twitter or converting Grand Prix event times for time zones across globe, keeping us all sane. Find out more about the judges here! LET'S GET JUDGING. When you're finished reading, leave a comment to let us know what you thought about Skate Canada, how you think the real judges did, and how you think our judges did. If you disagree, sign up to judge an event later in the year and share your thoughts! Welcome to the first re-judging of a Grand Prix event - Skate America 2015! On October 23-24, some of the top skaters from around the world converged in a city they'd never heard of before (I heard you were great, Milwaukee!) to stun the crowd with their awe- or ow- inspiring performances. And there was a lot of both.
Here are the judges for this event in alphabetical order: Amanda can be found on Twitter! Jennifer can be found talking about her newest book or posting pictures from her most recently attended skating event on her website and Twitter. Mara can be found editing and formatting everyone's answers right here or whining about how much reading she has to finish on Twitter. Patrick can be found commentating past skates on YouTube or current ones on Twitter. Tiffany can be found blogging about food (and so much more!) on her website and on Twitter. Find out more about the judges here! LET'S GET JUDGING. When you're finished reading, leave a comment to let us know what you thought about Skate America, how you think the real judges did, and how you think our judges did. If you disagree, sign up to judge an event later in the year and share your thoughts! Figure skating is beautiful, athletic - and controversial. Every dedicated and not-so-dedicated fan remembers a skate that was completely perfect - and a time when the judges didn't agree.
The Judges' Table was designed to allow skating fans the chance to have their say. When you sit down at The Judges' Table, you make the decisions. After every major competitions, five or six "judges" from the skating fan community will give us their thoughts on the best performances, the worst, where the judges got it right, where they got it wrong, and what we can look forward to in the remainder of the season and beyond. Interested in becoming a judge? Click here to join our list! It doesn't matter if you've watched every skating event for the last ten years or haven't watched since that one time back in 1994 with the club and the knee - everyone is welcome to sit at The Judges' Table! We'll be kicking off the season with Skate America in late October - check back after the event to hear from our first round of judges. |
